Jason Roy Joins Southern Brave After Du Plessis Exit

Jason Roy has found a fresh opportunity in the Hundred after rediscovering his form with Surrey. He will replace Faf du Plessis in the Southern Brave squad after the veteran South African batter withdrew to undergo groin surgery. Du Plessis had been signed on a Β£78,500 contract but aggravated the injury, sustained during the IPL, while playing in Major League Cricket.

Roy, who will turn 35 soon, previously lifted the Hundred trophy with Oval Invincibles in 2023 but has generally struggled in the competition. Across three seasons, he averaged just 19.55 with a strike rate of 132.09. Last year, he was handed a late opportunity by Northern Superchargers but didn’t play due to a shoulder problem.

Roy’s T20 Revival Earns New Deal

Although Roy again went undrafted this year after listing himself with a Β£63,000 reserve price, his form in the T20 Blast has been enough to secure a replacement deal. Shifting to No. 3 for Surrey, he began the season with three half-centuries in five matches. Despite a quieter run in recent innings, his total of 301 runs at a strike rate nearing 142 convinced Southern Brave to bring him in.

Roy’s signing was completed before Tuesday’s β€˜wildcard’ draft, when all eight Hundred teams will fill four final roster spotsβ€”two for men and two for womenβ€”based partly on domestic performances.

Meanwhile, the Brave are monitoring the fitness of Finn Allen, who picked up a foot injury in the MLC and will miss New Zealand’s T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe. Allen had contributed 240 runs across nine innings last year and was retained on a Β£52,000 contract despite previous injury setbacks.

New Faces in Women’s Hundred

In the women’s competition, Birmingham Phoenix have signed Millie Taylor as an injury replacement for Charis Paveley, who has been sidelined by a foot problem. Taylor, a left-arm wristspinner, has impressed with 15 wickets in the T20 Blast this year. This will be her debut appearance in the Hundred. Her twin sister, Mary, represents Hampshire and Southern Brave.

Southern Brave, who finished as runners-up last season, will again be captained by James Vince and have made minimal changes to their squad.
