India’s Playing XI Update Ahead of 2nd Test vs England: Bumrah’s Fitness Doubt and Pacers’ Intense Practice

India: Bumrah Doubt, Pacers’ Intense Nets Ahead of 2nd Test

Bumrah’s Chances for Edgbaston Test Remain Uncertain

India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to feature in the upcoming second Test against England at Edgbaston, starting July 2, according to ESPNCricinfo sources. The team management has confirmed a workload management plan for Bumrah, limiting him to only three Tests in the series, though the specific matches have not been officially disclosed yet.

During the Leeds Test, Bumrah impressed with a five-wicket haul in the first innings but went wicketless in the second, bowling nearly 44 overs throughout the match. Given his history of injuries and workload concerns, his presence for the Edgbaston Test is doubtful.

“Bumrah’s chances to take the field on July 2 remain low,” a source told ESPNCricinfo. “The plan was to play him in the first and third Tests, with decisions on the fourth or fifth still pending depending on the series progression.”

Team’s Training Session and Bumrah’s Recovery

After traveling, the Indian squad returned to practice on Friday, engaging in a rigorous five-hour net session. Bumrah was present at the ground but did not bowl or bat during the session, which was held behind closed doors. It’s unclear if he focused on fitness drills or bowled privately.

Mohammed Siraj warmed up with the bat before joining Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna inside the nets. Observers from outside the venue noted Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep bowled long spells, with Arshdeep notably bowling with an old ball around the wicket to right-handed batsmen.

Preparing for Edgbaston Conditions and Team Strategy

The intense net practice, especially Arshdeep’s use of the old ball, suggests India is preparing for conditions that may favor reverse swing, a factor expected in Birmingham.

“The mood in camp is focused and calm,” a team insider shared. “There’s no urge to overthink the Headingley loss, despite some strong performances. The message is to stick to the process, repeat what works, and respond better next time.”

The team has optional training scheduled for Saturday, with another session planned for Monday. Bumrah has not been completely ruled out for Edgbaston, with final combination talks yet to begin.
