The violence unfolded during halftime of the second leg at the Libertadores Stadium. Fans began throwing objects, including a stun grenade, onto the field, forcing officials to first pause the game and later abandon it entirely just minutes into the second half.

One Chilean supporter, trying to escape attacks from rival fans, was seen jumping from the stands in desperation. According to an AFP reporter present at the stadium, groups of home fans also stormed outside, assaulting visiting supporters and even stripping some of their clothes.
