The last-16 clash of the regional competition between Argentine giants Independiente and Universidad de Chile ended in chaos on Wednesday in Buenos Aires after violent clashes erupted among fans. Ten people were injured, and police confirmed that 90 arrests were made in connection with the incident.
Chaos Breaks Out at Libertadores Stadium
The violence unfolded during halftime of the second leg at the Libertadores Stadium. Fans began throwing objects, including a stun grenade, onto the field, forcing officials to first pause the game and later abandon it entirely just minutes into the second half.
One Chilean supporter, trying to escape attacks from rival fans, was seen jumping from the stands in desperation. According to an AFP reporter present at the stadium, groups of home fans also stormed outside, assaulting visiting supporters and even stripping some of their clothes.

Independiente vs Universidad de Chile violence
Independiente officials confirmed that ten people were injured in the clashes. At the time of abandonment, the score was 1-1 after 48 minutes, though Universidad de Chile held the advantage following their 1-0 first-leg victory at home.
Both clubs issued statements strongly condemning the violence, expressing disappointment that fan behavior overshadowed the match. Players from both sides reportedly attempted to calm their supporters during the unrest but were unsuccessful.
