Gautam Gambhir's Coaching Style Questioned by Gary Kirsten

Following Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as head coach of the Indian cricket team, former India coach Gary Kirsten has raised important concerns regarding Gambhir’s ability to connect with the current generation of players. Gambhir took over the coaching role after Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended in June 2024.

Under his leadership, Team India has shown mixed results — suffering a major defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in January 2025, but bouncing back to win the Champions Trophy 2025, marking their second ICC title within a year, after the T20 World Cup 2024.

Kirsten Reflects on Gambhir’s Personality and Leadership

Gary Kirsten, who once coached Gambhir during his playing days, spoke candidly about his former player’s strong and distinct personality. However, he questioned whether that personality is the right fit for the current Indian squad.

“I liked Gautam, the player, a lot. There is a strength in him which is very useful. But he has a personality and he has a style. The biggest thing is whether that personality and style connects with the Indian players? That’s what really matters,” Kirsten said in an interview with The Indian Express.

Past Success Doesn’t Guarantee Future Results

Kirsten acknowledged Gambhir’s success in IPL and recalled a moment from the past when he showed leadership potential.

“He did a great job when we made him ODI captain against New Zealand before the South Africa tour,” Kirsten added.

Despite previous accomplishments, Kirsten emphasized that coaching at the national level requires more than tactical knowledge — it demands a deep emotional connection with players. As India trails 1-2 in the ongoing series against England, all eyes are now on Gambhir’s leadership heading into the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester on July 23.
