Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed that defender Gabriel Magalhães will miss “weeks” of action after picking up a thigh injury while playing for Brazil. The centre-back limped off during last weekend’s friendly against Senegal at the Emirates and was later ruled out of Brazil’s match against Tunisia.
“Gabi is going to be out for weeks,” Arteta said, adding that another scan next Wednesday will determine a more accurate recovery timeline.
Major Blow Ahead of North London Derby
Gabriel has been crucial for Arsenal this season, anchoring a defence that has conceded just five league goals as the Gunners sit four points clear at the top. With the 27-year-old unavailable, Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera are expected to compete for his spot when Arsenal face rivals Tottenham on Sunday.
“He’s our leader in the backline, so it’s definitely a blow,” Arteta admitted.
Meanwhile, defender Riccardo Califiori is doubtful with a hip issue and has yet to participate in training since returning from Italy duty. Arteta says the club will “give him every chance” to prove he is fit. Striker Viktor Gyokeres also remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.
