Foden Steps Up in Thrilling Etihad Victory
Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden delivered a masterclass performance as City claimed a dramatic 3-2 win over Leeds at the Etihad Stadium. Foden’s quick-fire opener, scored just 59 seconds into the match, marked City’s fastest home league goal since David Silva struck after 52 seconds in September 2019. The England international then completed his brace with a stunning 91st-minute winner, rescuing Pep Guardiola’s side after Leeds had fought back to level in the second half.
Former City goalkeeper Joe Hart praised Foden’s impact: “He got them out of jail, but he got them out of jail with absolute quality. He was absolutely purring, he stepped up for Manchester City.”
Foden admitted he was driven by personal motivation: “I was so hungry to play today, not to prove to anyone else but to prove to myself that I can still score goals. I’ve been a bit frustrated, and it was in the back of my mind to put it right. I was delighted to put two away today.”
City Overcome Leeds’ Second-Half Fightback
After taking the lead early, City faced a tough second half as Leeds scored twice, putting Guardiola’s men under pressure. Despite the shock, Foden’s persistence and tactical awareness allowed him to find space and finish decisively. “It was a frustrating half, but when we had a short break, the manager got us together to adapt to their formation, and we started playing again,” Foden said.
Guardiola highlighted Foden’s consistent quality: “Since he came up with us, he has done it thousands of times. He can shoot strong. He is able to put the ball simply in the net. Phil has to be around the box. His finishing is so quick. I think Phil is doing a really good season.”
Foden’s Display Could Boost England Prospects
Foden’s performance also strengthens his case for a central role in England’s squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Germany coach Thomas Tuchel had previously suggested that Foden thrives in a central position rather than on the wing, and Saturday’s display validated that approach. Former England striker Chris Sutton called Foden’s second goal “a wonderful piece of individual skill,” while Ellen White described it as “phenomenal” and “outstanding.”
Foden reflected on the importance of teamwork and resilience: “A title race is never straightforward. There are always ups and downs, and periods where you can’t get going. We’ve had that recently, and I’m delighted with the courage and heart shown from the lads to keep going. Hopefully we can kick on from here now, but you never know what to expect.”
City will now hope to maintain pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal, as the race for the top continues to intensify.
