Former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock made a hilarious blunder during his commentary stint on Day 1 of the first Test between Pakistan and South Africa at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday, October 12.
Fans React After Pollock Calls Shan Masood ‘Captain of India’
During the 39th over of Pakistan’s innings, Pollock noticed a fan in the stands holding a banner that read “King Babar.” While discussing the crowd’s excitement to see Babar Azam bat, the former Proteas skipper accidentally referred to Shan Masood as the “captain of India.”
“𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆’𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒖𝒑𝒔𝒆𝒕. 𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏’𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒐𝒅, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒂, 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝑩𝒂𝒃𝒂𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆. 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒂 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔,” 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒌 𝒅𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒅𝒄𝒂𝒔𝒕.
The funny mix-up quickly went viral on social media, with fans sharing clips of the incident and joking about the commentary goof.
Pakistan steady after early wobble on Day 1
After the humorous episode, Shan Masood went on to play a solid innings, scoring 76 off 147 balls before being trapped lbw by Prenelan Subrayen in the 48th over. Following his dismissal, Babar Azam walked in at No. 4 but couldn’t convert his start, falling to Simon Harmer for 23 off 48 deliveries.
Pakistan, who were cruising at 161/1, suddenly found themselves struggling at 199/5 as South Africa fought back strongly. However, a composed partnership between Mohammad Rizwan (62)* and Salman Agha (52)* steadied the innings, guiding Pakistan to 313/5 at stumps on Day 1.
