South African rising star Dewald Brevis delivered a sensational performance, smashing a record-breaking unbeaten 125 off just 41 balls to help the Proteas level the T20I series 1-1 against Australia. Nicknamed ‘Baby AB’ for his batting style reminiscent of AB de Villiers, Brevis became the youngest South African to score a T20I century and the second-fastest for his country, trailing only David Miller’s 35-ball ton against Bangladesh in 2017.
Dewald Brevis’ knock included 12 fours and 6 sixes, turning the game around after South Africa was struggling at 57/3 in the seventh over. The innings also set new records as the highest individual T20I score by a South African, the highest against Australia, and the highest T20I score ever on Australian soil.
Former South African pacer Dale Steyn took to social media with unfiltered praise, calling Brevis “the real f**** deal.”*
Match Highlights and Series Update
After Australia chose to bowl first, they got early breakthroughs through Ben Dwarshuis and Glenn Maxwell, putting South Africa under pressure. However, Brevis and Tristan Stubbs mounted a powerful counterattack, sharing a crucial 126-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
In response, the Australian bowlers struck early, removing key batsmen Travis Head and Cameron Green, leaving the hosts struggling. Despite a fighting half-century from Tim David, which showcased his consistent form, Kagiso Rabada ended his resistance with a key dismissal.
Alex Carey tried to revive Australia’s innings, but the target proved too steep, and they eventually fell 53 runs short, suffering their second-largest home defeat in T20Is.
With the series now tied 1-1, fans can look forward to a thrilling decider in Cairns on August 16.
