Matheus Cunha has been called up for Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers this window due to his impressive club form. However, the Wolverhampton forward had already lost his temper and was sent off in the English Premier League before the international break. To make matters worse, the English Football Association (FA) has imposed a further punishment on him. Cunha has been banned for three matches and fined £50,000 (over 7.8 million taka).
The FA stated, “Matheus Cunha will be banned from domestic football until Sunday, April 13.” This includes three matches with his team, Wolverhampton. The incident occurred earlier when Wolverhampton faced Bournemouth in the FA Cup on March 1. Cunha, who scored once in the game, was shown a red card just before the final whistle (120 minutes) after a confrontation with an opponent.

Initially, Cunha received a three-match ban for the red card. Before leaving the field, he got into a heated argument with Bournemouth’s Milos Carquez, as well as the match referee, his teammates, and coaching staff. Unfortunately for his team, they lost the match after a 1-1 draw in extra time, eventually losing 5-4 in the penalty shootout.
This marks Cunha’s second ban this season. Earlier in December, he was banned for two matches for an altercation with an opponent in a Premier League game against Ipswich Town. Currently, Wolverhampton sits in 17th place in the Premier League, with relegation a real threat. If they drop any further, they will not be able to compete in the league next season.
Meanwhile, Cunha is playing in the World Cup qualifiers with Brazil. Wolves renewed his contract for another year and a half in February. The 25-year-old forward is in excellent form, having scored 15 goals and provided 4 assists in 29 matches this season. Cunha will miss Wolves’ next three matches against Everton (March 8), Southampton (March 15), and West Ham (April 1).
