Beaumont Obstruction Appeal Brings Back Memories of Dean Run-Out

Beaumont Obstruction Appeal Revives Dean Run-Out Memories

India’s return to Lord’s for the second ODI against England stirred memories of a controversial moment nearly three years ago — Deepti Sharma’s run-out of Charlie Dean. Though the incident wasn’t discussed within the Indian team this time, Smriti Mandhana admitted it was impossible to ignore the connection.

“𝑫𝒐𝒆𝒔𝒏’𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏, 𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕? 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝑳𝒐𝒓𝒅’𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒆𝒅?” 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂 𝒔𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒆.

Beaumont Appeal Sparks Tension

During England’s chase of a revised target of 144 in 29 overs, Tammy Beaumont was the focus of a brief controversy. She had raced to 25 off 17 balls when an attempted single led to a chaotic moment. Beaumont turned back mid-run after clipping a Deepti delivery to midwicket. Jemimah Rodrigues fired the ball back to the striker’s end, where it bounced off Beaumont’s pad. Richa Ghosh immediately appealed for “obstructing the field.”

The umpires reviewed the footage and ruled Beaumont not out.

“𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒏’𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒍,” 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒂. “𝑱𝒆𝒎𝒊 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕’𝒗𝒆 𝒌𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒕, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒖𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝒔𝒂𝒘 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒆𝒔. 𝑺𝒐, 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒇𝒂𝒊𝒓.”

At the other end, Amy Jones waited nervously as the appeal was reviewed. She later said, “It was weird. I’ve never been out there for something like that. Tammy wasn’t trying to block anything intentionally.”

Rain Interruption and Controversial Reviews

Rain interrupted the match twice, forcing the target to be adjusted to 115 in 24 overs. After the restart, Nat Sciver-Brunt was bowled by Kranti Goud. India later reviewed for a caught behind against Sophia Dunkley, even though Ghosh was overheard on the stump mic saying, “There was no bat.” The review showed no edge, sparking questions about India’s strategy.

Jones, again at the crease, remained composed and acknowledged the mind games:

“𝑾𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒅 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒅𝒓𝒂𝒘𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒊𝒕. 𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒂𝒎𝒆. 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔.”

With the series now tied 1-1, all eyes turn to Durham on Tuesday for the decider — a match carrying not only competitive significance but emotional weight from past clashes.
