Axar Patel

Axar Patel was named deputy to Suryakumar Yadav for India’s five-match T20I series against England earlier this year, a nod to his consistent performances in the shortest format. While his batting struggled, Axar impressed with the ball, taking six wickets across five games at an average of 16.50.

Axar Patel Appointed Vice-Captain for England T20I Series

The Gujarat all-rounder also showcased his leadership skills during the 2025 IPL season, captaining the Delhi Capitals with commendable effort, although the team fell short of making the playoffs.

However, despite his leadership and bowling contributions, Axar is reportedly set to lose his vice-captaincy role in India’s T20 squad. According to a report by RevSportz, Shubman Gill is likely to replace Axar Patel as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy for the upcoming Asia Cup, scheduled in the UAE from September 9 to 28.

Shubman Gill’s Rise and Team Composition for Asia Cup

Shubman Gill recently captained India in the five-Test series against England, finishing as the highest run-scorer with 754 runs in 10 innings at an exceptional average of 75.40. His solid performance helped India draw the series 2-2, showcasing resilience and determination.

Although Shubman hasn’t featured in T20Is since July 2024, his record stands at 578 runs in 21 matches, with a strike rate of 139.28. His return to the squad could impact the batting order, particularly putting Abhishek Sharma’s spot at the top under pressure. Abhishek was the leading run-scorer in the England T20I series but may find his place threatened.

Sanju Samson is expected to keep wickets and open the innings, with Shubman likely to join him at the top. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal is also vying for a spot, adding further competition for batting positions.
