The much-anticipated ODI World Cup clash between Australia and Sri Lanka in Colombo was abandoned due to persistent rain, leaving both teams with one point each. Despite early optimism as players walked out to inspect the conditions before the toss, the rain intensified quickly, forcing the officials to call off the game roughly two and a half hours after the scheduled start time.
Sri Lanka Gain a Valuable Point
Sri Lanka will likely be the more satisfied of the two sides, managing to collect a point against the reigning world champions. Before the washout, both teams were coming off contrasting results β Australia had crushed New Zealand by 89 runs in Indore, while Sri Lanka suffered a DLS defeat to India by 59 runs in Guwahati.

Following the result, Australia remain at the top of the table with three points, while Sri Lanka move up to fifth, despite a negative net run rate of -1.255. Historically, Sri Lanka have never beaten Australia in international cricket, losing all 11 ODIs and eight T20Is between the sides.
Weather Continues to Threaten World Cup Schedule
With Colombo set to host the India vs Pakistan encounter next, organizers are keeping a close eye on the weather forecast β which, unfortunately, doesnβt look promising.
Australia will stay in Colombo to face Pakistan on October 8 before heading to Visakhapatnam to take on India on October 9, while Sri Lanka will now have a long 10-day break before facing England on October 11.
