Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Everton left head coach Ruben Amorim openly questioning his team’s progress, despite playing 77 minutes against 10 men.

Everton’s shock red-card incident between Idrissa Gueye and Michael Keane should’ve given United a major advantage, but it instead highlighted deeper issues within Amorim’s side.

United Struggle Despite Big Advantage

Even after the Toffees went down to 10 men early, United lacked sharpness and control.
Young defenders Patrick Dorgu and Leny Yoro repeatedly gave the ball away, while Amad Diallo, filling in for the injured Matheus Cunha, failed to make an impact.

Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo and Joshua Zirkzee all missed key moments that could have changed the game.

Amorim didn’t hide his disappointment, saying:

“We are not even near the point we should be to fight for the best positions in the league.”

A Missed Opportunity at Old Trafford

A victory could have lifted United into fifth place, yet they became the first United side ever to lose a Premier League game at Old Trafford after the opponent received a red card.

Amorim summed up the evening simply:

“They were the better team. We deserved to lose.”

The defeat also raises questions just one year after his debut match, especially considering the club’s massive £250m summer investment.

Amorim Wants More Fight From His Players

Interestingly, Amorim agreed with David Moyes’ view that the Gueye–Keane altercation showed passion—something he feels his side lacks.

“Fighting is not a bad thing,” he said. “I hope my players, when they lose the ball, fight each other.”

But with November showing signs of regression after a strong October, the Portuguese coach admits he fears a return to the negativity of last season.

“I feel afraid of returning to this feeling of last season. That is my biggest concern.”
