Aminul Islam Dismisses Claims of Government Interference in BCB Election

Aminul Islam denies government role in BCB election

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam has firmly denied any government interference in the board’s recent election process, emphasizing that all actions were carried out “within the BCB constitution.” His remarks came following controversy over a letter he issued on September 18 to the country’s sports secretary, requesting the cancellation of previous councillor nomination forms and submission of new ones.

High Court Upholds Suspension of Aminul’s Letter

A writ petition had been filed challenging Aminul’s decision, after which the High Court temporarily suspended the letter’s effectiveness on September 22. On Sunday, Justice Farah Mahbub, the chamber judge of the appellate division, upheld the suspension order — allowing the BCB election to proceed on October 6 despite the ongoing disputes surrounding manipulation and transparency concerns.

Explaining his side, Aminul said he acted according to the constitution as there weren’t enough qualified nominations received from district and divisional bodies.

“𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝑰 𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒔, 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒎𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒂,” 𝑨𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒍 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅. “𝑾𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅𝒏’𝒕 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒅 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔, 𝒔𝒐 𝑰 𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒔.”

Aminul Denies Political Pressure

Aminul also refuted any notion of political pressure or government influence in the BCB election. He praised the country’s sports adviser for ensuring a transparent process and promoting fair competition.

“𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒅𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒍𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒆 𝒅𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒚 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎,” 𝑨𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒍 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅. “𝑯𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒍𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒂 𝒇𝒂𝒊𝒓 𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒃𝒐𝒂𝒓𝒅. 𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒑𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 — 𝒎𝒚 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒂𝒊𝒎 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒉 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕.”

He further added that he was ready to step down if deemed unfit, reaffirming his commitment to integrity and the sport’s growth.

Tamim and Faruque Controversies

Aminul chose not to comment on Tamim Iqbal’s withdrawal from the elections or Faruque Ahmed’s return to the board. Tamim had earlier alleged irregularities in the election process, citing Aminul’s letter as a major concern. Meanwhile, Faruque’s re-entry into the board raised eyebrows since his nomination form arrived after the deadline.

Aminul stated that if re-elected, he plans to enforce “zero tolerance” toward conflicts of interest — a persistent issue within the BCB.

At the end of his term, Aminul humorously compared his experience to a cricket match, saying:

“𝑰𝒏 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕, 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒂𝒏’𝒕 𝒃𝒐𝒘𝒍 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒘𝒐 𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒏 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 — 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒏𝒐-𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒔. 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏’𝒕 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒅.”
