West Bromwich Albion escaped a club-record nightmare on the road after Chris Mepham rose in the 95th minute to grab a dramatic equaliser against Derby County at Pride Park.
Mepham’s Late Header Rescues the Baggies
Before Mepham’s last-gasp intervention, the visitors were heading toward a miserable 11th straight away defeat — a run that would have matched a record stretching back more than a century. Derby had taken the lead in the first half when debutant goalkeeper Max O’Leary fumbled a free-kick, allowing Patrick Agyemang to poke home.
“𝑾𝒆 𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒕. 𝑰𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒂𝒄𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒆 𝒘𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒅.”
West Brom boss Eric Ramsay said after collecting his first charge point.
West Brom pressed late in the game, and their persistence paid off when a corner in stoppage time found Mepham at the back post. His powerful header proved too strong for Jacob Widell Zetterström, crossing the line to level the match.
Derby Frustrated as Play-Off Push Stalls
The late blow denied Derby a vital win that could have lifted them into the Championship play-off spots. Rams boss John Eustace admitted the disappointment was hard to hide.
“It’s really frustrating to concede in the last minute. The lads worked their socks off, but we couldn’t see it through,” he told BBC Radio Derby.
While West Brom eased their away woes with a hard-earned point, they suffered injury concerns, with Karlan Grant forced off early and Krystian Bielik also leaving the field before the final whistle.
