Hansi Flick’s remarkable run in finals continued on Sunday as Barcelona edged Real Madrid 3-2 to claim the Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah. It marked Flick’s third final with the Catalan club, and for the third time, Real Madrid were left on the losing side.
After winning both the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey last season, the German coach added another Super Cup trophy to his growing collection, further cementing his reputation as a big-game specialist.
The Mentality Behind Flick’s Perfect Finals Record
Before arriving in Barcelona, Hansi enjoyed similar dominance at Bayern Munich, where he won five finals, including the Champions League, German Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and German Super Cup in 2020. That makes it eight finals played and eight finals won across his managerial career.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Hansi was asked about the secret behind his flawless record.
“𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕? 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒂𝒍 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒏𝒕,” 𝑭𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂 𝒔𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒆. “𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒎𝒆. 𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒆𝒓𝒔’ 𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕. 𝑰𝒕’𝒔 100 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆.”
The Barcelona coach stressed that he never allows past success to influence his approach to decisive matches.
“𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒂𝒔𝒕. 𝑻𝒐𝒅𝒂𝒚’𝒔 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍. 𝑾𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍,” 𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒅.
Pride After Clasico Triumph
Flick also highlighted the significance of lifting a trophy against Barcelona’s greatest rivals on such a grand stage.
“𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒏 𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚 𝒂 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍, 𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒂 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒐, 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒊𝒏,” 𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅. “𝑰’𝒎 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎. 𝑾𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒚𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒇𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒍.”
With another trophy secured and his unbeaten finals streak intact, one message remains clear: when Hansi Flick reaches a final, winning follows.
