Bangladesh’s 2-1 defeat to Singapore last June still stings for supporters. Many believe the result could have been different if the referee had awarded a penalty in the match’s dying seconds. That frustration has resurfaced after it was confirmed that the same “controversial referee” will officiate today’s high-voltage Bangladesh–India encounter in Dhaka.
Philippine official Clifford Postanis, a FIFA-listed since 2014 and the most senior Filipino heading into 2025, has once again been handed control of Bangladesh’s match.
“Fans are already on edge, especially with the memory of the previous decision still fresh,” echoed many supporters online.
All-Philippines Refereeing Team Returns
Postanis will be supported by two fellow Filipinos—Nanola Krizmark, a FIFA assistant referee since 2017, and Lachicha Giovanni, who has been on the list since 2018. All three were also involved in the controversial Singapore fixture.
The incident that sparked widespread criticism occurred in the 93rd minute, when Faisal Ahmed Fahim was brought down inside the box by Singapore defender Irfan Najib. Despite clear appeals, no penalty was awarded, leaving fans furious and convinced the match result was unfair.
“A single whistle could have changed everything that night,” a Bangladesh supporter said.
To monitor the refereeing team’s performance, Jordan’s Nasser Mustafa, a former FIFA referee, has been appointed as the match assessor. The match commissioner will observe the match operations, see Thu Win from Myanmar.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan official Kashun Lakmal will serve as the fourth referee. He recently officiated Bangladesh’s friendly against Nepal on November 13, during which he drew attention for the delay, which substitutions—something Hamza Chowdhury openly expressed dissatisfaction with during the Singapore match.
