Alick Athanaze

Washington Sundar showcased his class with the ball on Day 3 of the second Test between India and the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The off-spinner produced a peach of a delivery to dismiss the in-form Alick Athanaze just before the Tea break, sending the crowd into a roar.

Sundar’s Spin Magic Stuns Athanaze

Athanaze, who had top-scored for the West Indies in the first innings, looked confident after getting off the mark with a crisp boundary. However, Sundar had the final say. In the 15th over, bowling from round the wicket, the spinner delivered a superb ball that drifted in and then turned sharply past Athanaze’s defence to knock over the off-stump.

“𝑰𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒃𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒈𝒈𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅,” 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒆𝒓 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒂 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑨𝒂𝒌𝒂𝒔𝒉 𝑪𝒉𝒐𝒑𝒓𝒂 𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒊𝒓. “𝑺𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒓 𝒎𝒊𝒙𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒇𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒏 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒍𝒚.”

The dismissal left Athanaze visibly surprised, as he appeared to have done little wrong but was undone by sheer brilliance. This wicket marked Sundar’s first breakthrough in the match after he went wicketless in the first innings, conceding 41 runs off 13 overs.

India Enforce Follow-On After Strong Bowling Show

Earlier, India’s bowling attack dismantled the West Indies for 248 in their first innings. Kuldeep Yadav starred with a five-wicket haul (5/82), while Ravindra Jadeja supported with three scalps. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj chipped in with one wicket each.

“𝑲𝒖𝒍𝒅𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝑺𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒓’𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒑𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆,” 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒓 𝑷𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒚𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒋𝒉𝒂.

India enforced the follow-on, pushing the visitors to bat again. The West Indies, led by opener John Campbell’s fluent fifty off 69 balls, showed better resistance in their second innings as they look to erase the deficit and stay alive in the contest.
