Rohit Sharma remains one of the most celebrated figures in both Indian and world cricket, commanding immense respect for his remarkable achievements. An ODI giant and master of big-match performances, he holds the third-highest number of centuries in ODI history. Over the years, Rohit has become a symbol of consistency and leadership in limited-overs cricket.
With India’s young Test squad recently triumphing in England, attention has turned to the future of ODI captaincy. While Rohit has led the side with distinction, there is increasing speculation about whether he will continue as skipper or pass the baton to current Test captain Shubman Gill.
“I still have the hunger to contribute to Indian cricket in ODIs,” Rohit has often stated in interviews, hinting at his long-term ambitions.
Focus Shifts Entirely to ODIs
After the IPL 2025 season, Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket before the England series, choosing to focus exclusively on the ODI format. Following a family vacation in England, he returned to Mumbai last week and immediately resumed training.
On August 12, he shared an Instagram story from a suburban gym, working out alongside close friend and former BCCI assistant coach Abhishek Nayar—a mentor who has trained several stars, including KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik, and Rinku Singh.
His commitment to fitness and preparation suggests that Rohit Sharma is already eyeing the 2027 ODI World Cup, which is still over two years away. Members of the team management believe he could be given a farewell series—possibly against Australia—before the leadership transition.
“When you see Rohit Sharma train with that intensity, you know he’s not done yet,” a source close to the team said.
ODI Legacy and Records
Rohit’s ODI resume is nothing short of legendary—32 centuries, placing him behind only Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. He was also the Player of the Match in India’s Champions Trophy final win over New Zealand.
In his career so far, Rohit has featured in 273 ODIs, amassing 11,168 runs at an average of 48.76. His record includes three double-centuries, with a world-record highest score of 264 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata.
As selectors and the BCCI weigh the future leadership options, Rohit Sharma’s determination to remain at the peak of ODI cricket remains as fierce as ever.
