British teenager Matthew Brennan secured his first World Tour victory with a remarkable performance in stage one of the Volta a Catalunya.
The 19-year-old Visma-Lease a Bike rider surged ahead in the final metre of a grueling uphill sprint, battling wet conditions in Sant Feliu de Guixols.
Tibor del Grosso of Alpecin-Deceuninck had launched an early attack and appeared set for victory, but Brennan chased him down in a thrilling finish, narrowly edging past.
Despite pressure from sprint specialist Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who stayed close behind, Brennan held his ground to claim the dramatic 178.3km stage win.
This marks his fourth consecutive victory, following two wins with Visma’s development squad and his first pro triumph at the GP de Denain.
Stage two of the Volta covers 177.3km from Banyoles to Figueres on Tuesday, with the seven-stage race concluding in Barcelona on Sunday.
